Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about eSIMs and traveling connected in Latin America
General Questions
What is an eSIM?
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card built into your device. Instead of inserting a physical SIM, you download a mobile profile directly to your phone or tablet — giving you instant access to local data plans wherever you travel.
Why should I use an eSIM instead of buying a local SIM card?
- No need to visit a store or show ID
- Activate before you fly
- Stay connected the moment you land
- Avoid high roaming fees and confusing contracts
- Switch between plans easily if you travel across borders
Is my phone compatible with eSIM?
Most modern smartphones (iPhone XR or newer, Google Pixel 4+, Samsung Galaxy S20+, etc.) are eSIM-compatible. You can confirm by checking your device settings:
- iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM
- Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager
Do I need to unlock my phone?
Yes. Your phone must be unlocked (not tied to a specific carrier) for the eSIM to work with local networks abroad.
Using LATAM Travellers eSIMs
How do I install my eSIM?
Once you buy a plan, we'll email you a QR code and step-by-step instructions:
- Connect to Wi-Fi
- Scan the QR code
- Follow the on-screen prompts to install
- Turn on "Data Roaming" for the new eSIM when you arrive
Can I install before I travel?
Yes. You can install the eSIM profile anytime, but most plans only activate when you first connect in the destination country.
How do I switch between my home SIM and eSIM?
Your phone allows you to toggle between lines. You can keep your home SIM active for calls/texts and use the eSIM for data — or disable your home SIM entirely to avoid roaming.
Can I use hotspot/tethering with my eSIM?
Most LATAM Travellers eSIMs support hotspot and data sharing, but it can vary by network. Check the plan details before purchase.
Plans, Data & Validity
When does my plan start?
Some plans start counting once you install, others start when you first connect in your destination. Each plan page will clearly say which applies.
How long is my plan valid?
Each plan lists a validity period — for example, 7 days, 15 days, or 30 days — starting from activation.
What happens when I run out of data?
You can purchase another plan! Simply buy a new eSIM for your destination and install it.
Do I get a local phone number?
Most eSIMs are data-only, so they don't include a local number. You can still make calls and send texts using apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime, or Telegram.
Travel & Coverage
Which countries are covered?
We offer single-country plans covering almost all of Latin America — including Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Costa Rica, and more. Browse our full country list.
Will it work across multiple countries?
Our plans are country-specific. If you're traveling to multiple countries, you'll need to purchase a separate eSIM for each destination.
What if I move between cities or regions?
Your eSIM automatically connects to the strongest local partner network available. No manual switching required.
Troubleshooting
My eSIM isn't connecting — what should I do?
Try these steps:
- Make sure "Data Roaming" is ON for your eSIM line
- Restart your phone
- Check you have mobile data turned on
- If still not working, manually select a network (Settings → Mobile Network → Network Operators)
If you're still having trouble, contact our support team.
Can I delete and reinstall my eSIM?
Some eSIMs can only be installed once, so avoid deleting unless instructed by our support team.
Can I transfer the eSIM to another phone?
No — once an eSIM is installed on one device, it can't be reused or transferred.
